Journey’ is an overworked word as of late, but I can consider none different to describe the making of a documentary film. Ten years ago, a film of mine could possibly be made in six months, even less. The main work was the research, the journalism.Whenever I felt assured I had the idea of a ‘story’, I’d go to the ITV Network within the UK and seek a broadcast fee. If that was forthcoming, ITV would fund the manufacturing. The distinction now’s that I, the movie-maker, must elevate most of the manufacturing cash. Also, my documentaries have changed significantly in recent years. They at the moment are made for the cinema in addition to Tv, and for the internet. I’ve made three movies this way, The War on Democracy (2007), The War You don’t See (2010) and Utopia (2013). Utopia took greater than two years to make. In elevating the cash for these films, I’ve been lucky to seek out sympathetic philanthropists and foundations, and persuade them to contribute with out attaching any editorial strings.
